Some of their most famous songs include "I Want You Back", "ABC", and "I'll Be There". Michael left The Jacksons in 1984 to focus on his solo career.
History of the Group
The Jackson 5 started their journey in Gary, Indiana. They performed for the very first time in 1964. At that time, Michael was only six years old! In 1966, the Jackson 5 won a talent show at a high school in Gary. This helped them get noticed.
Joining Motown Records
In 1968, The Jackson 5 signed a contract with Motown. Motown was one of the biggest record companies for R&B and soul music.
In December 1969, Motown released their first album. It was called Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5. The song "I Want You Back" was released from this album. It quickly became a number one hit in the United States. The group's next two songs, "ABC" and "The Love You Save", also reached number one.
In 1970, they had another number one hit with "I'll Be There". That year was very busy for them. They released three studio albums: ABC, Third Album, and Jackson 5 Christmas Album. In 1971, they released two more studio albums. Maybe Tomorrow was a number one hit on the American soul albums chart for six weeks. Motown also released their first collection of greatest hits.
Michael Jackson released his first solo album in January 1972. It was called Got to Be There. The Jackson 5 continued to release albums. In 1972, they released Lookin' Through the Windows. In 1973, they released Skywriter and Get It Together. Their song "Dancing Machine" came out in 1974 and was a big hit. In 1975, The Jackson 5 released their last album with Motown. After this, they signed with Epic Records. Jermaine Jackson left the band, and his younger brother Randy took his place.
Becoming The Jacksons
In 1976, the band released their first album as The Jacksons. This was their first album with Epic Records. In 1978, they released the album Destiny. The brothers wrote and produced this album themselves. "Blame It on the Boogie" was a popular song from Destiny. Another song, "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)", reached number seven on the US Billboard 100 chart.
Their album Triumph came out in 1980. It reached number one on the Billboard R&B Albums chart. In 1984, The Jacksons released a song with Mick Jagger called "State of Shock". Later that year, Michael Jackson left the band. His solo album Thriller had become the best-selling album ever. He also won eight Grammy Awards for it.
The Jacksons released their last album, 2300 Jackson Street, in 1989. Michael and Marlon were not on most of this album. However, they did sing on the song "2300 Jackson Street". Their sisters Rebbie, La Toya, and Janet Jackson also sang on this song.
