The Ranuli Ice Piedmont (which is lednik Ranuli in Bulgarian) is a very large sheet of ice. It stretches about 7 nautical miles (that's roughly 13 kilometers) from south-southeast to north-northwest. It's also about 3 nautical miles (about 5.5 kilometers) wide from west-southwest to east-northeast.
You can find this huge ice sheet on the eastern side of the Sentinel Range in the Ellsworth Mountains of Antarctica. It's like a giant, slow-moving river of ice. The Ranuli Ice Piedmont gets its name from an old town called Ranuli in southeastern Bulgaria.
What is the Ranuli Ice Piedmont?
An ice piedmont is a type of glacier. It forms when several glaciers flow out of a mountain range and spread out into a wide, flat sheet of ice. Think of it like a giant, frozen fan at the base of mountains.
The Ranuli Ice Piedmont collects ice from the eastern slopes of Barnes Ridge. From there, its ice flows into other ice streams and glaciers. To the east-northeast, it joins the Rutford Ice Stream. To the north, it connects with the Young Glacier, and to the south, it meets the Ellen Glacier.
Where is Ranuli Ice Piedmont Located?
The Ranuli Ice Piedmont is located in a very cold and remote part of the world. Its exact location is at 78 degrees, 9 minutes, 50 seconds South and 84 degrees, 40 minutes, 0 seconds West. These numbers are like a special address that helps scientists find its precise spot on a map.
This area is part of Ellsworth Land in Western Antarctica. Maps of this region, including the Ranuli Ice Piedmont, were created by the United States in 1988.
