Ratatouille (movie) facts for kids
Ratatouille is a fun animated movie from 2007. It was made by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The movie was directed by Brad Bird and features the voices of actors like Patton Oswalt and Peter O'Toole.
The story takes place in Paris, France, a city famous for its food. It's about a very special rat named Remy who has an amazing sense of smell and dreams of becoming a great chef. But there's a big problem: rats are not usually welcome in kitchens! Remy teams up with a young human named Alfredo Linguini, who can't cook at all. Together, they try to make Remy's dream come true at a famous French restaurant.
The Story of Remy
Remy is different from other rats. He loves good food and wants to create delicious dishes, not just eat scraps. He often watches cooking shows and reads cookbooks. His family, however, just wants to find food to survive.
One day, Remy gets separated from his family and ends up in Paris. He finds himself in the kitchen of a famous restaurant once owned by his hero, Chef Auguste Gusteau. Gusteau believed that "anyone can cook," and Remy takes this to heart.
Remy soon meets Linguini, a clumsy young man who works as a garbage boy at the restaurant. Linguini accidentally makes a mess of a soup, but Remy secretly fixes it, making it taste wonderful. The restaurant's new head chef, Skinner, is surprised by the soup's taste. He thinks Linguini made it.
Remy and Linguini form an unusual partnership. Remy hides under Linguini's chef hat and pulls his hair to control his movements, helping Linguini cook amazing meals. This makes Linguini a rising star in the culinary world, but it's a secret they must keep from everyone.
Making the Movie
The idea for Ratatouille first came from Jan Pinkava in 2001. He imagined a rat who wanted to cook. Later, in 2005, Brad Bird took over as the director. He and the animation team wanted to make sure the movie felt very real, especially the food and the city of Paris.
To get everything just right, the crew visited France. They explored Paris and even went into real restaurant kitchens. They also talked to famous chefs in both France and the United States. This helped them understand how a professional kitchen works and how to make the food look delicious on screen. For example, the special ratatouille dish shown in the film was designed by a gourmet chef named Thomas Keller.
The movie first premiered on June 22, 2007, in Los Angeles, California. It was then shown in most theaters starting June 29, 2007.
Awards and Success
Ratatouille was a huge success! It earned over $620 million around the world, which is a lot of money for a movie. Critics and audiences loved it, praising its unique story, beautiful animation, and heartwarming message.
The film also won many awards. It received the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, which is one of the highest honors a movie can get. It also won a Golden Globe Award and a BAFTA Award for Best Animated Film, among others. People loved how the movie showed that talent can come from anywhere, even from a rat!
