Red Emma's Bookstore Coffeehouse is a special place in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. It's like a bookstore, coffee shop, and community center all in one! It's run by the people who work there, who own it together. This is called a worker-owner collective.

It's named after a famous person named Emma Goldman, who believed in people working together. Red Emma's opened in November 2004. They sell books, coffee that helps farmers get a fair price (called fair trade coffee), and tasty vegetarian and vegan food. You can also use their computers for free, get online with wireless internet, watch movies, learn about important topics, and join fun community events.

The Story of Red Emma's

Red Emma's was started in 2004. Two students from Johns Hopkins University, John Duda and Kate Khatib, created it. They wanted to open a new community space after another one, called Black Planet Books, closed in 2003.

Red Emma's first home was at 800 St. Paul Street in Mount Vernon. It stayed there until 2013. Since then, it has moved two times to new locations. In 2013, Red Emma's also started working with a coffee shop called Thread.

The 2640 Community Space

In March 2007, Red Emma's teamed up with St. John's United Methodist Church. Together, they created something called 2640. This is a special place for community activities and learning.

The 2640 space is located at 2640 Saint Paul Street in Charles Village. It is managed by the community and is not for making money. Besides Sunday church services, the building is used for many different community events.
