Allium rubens, also known as the reddish onion, is a type of wild onion. It is related to the onions we eat. This plant grows naturally in many parts of Asia.
You can find it in places like Siberia, European Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and Xinjiang in China. It likes sunny spots. You will often see it growing in open grasslands called steppes or in areas with small bushes.
What Does the Reddish Onion Look Like?
The reddish onion is a small plant. It has special parts called bulbs. These bulbs grow in groups. Each bulb is tiny, usually less than 10 millimeters across. That's about the size of a pea!
Stems and Leaves
The plant has a stem called a scape. This stem can grow up to 25 centimeters tall. That's about the length of a standard ruler. The leaves of the reddish onion are shaped like tubes. They are usually about as long as the stem. They are also quite narrow, about 10 to 20 millimeters wide.
Flowers
At the top of the stem, the reddish onion has flowers. These flowers grow in a cluster called an umbel. There are only a few flowers in each cluster. They are a pretty reddish-purple color.
