Reggie Barnes's Football Journey

College Years

Reggie Barnes went to Delaware State University. He was a fantastic player there. In 1988, he ran for 1,336 yards. During his whole college career, he gained an amazing 3,282 yards.

After college, Reggie wasn't chosen in the NFL draft. But he still got a chance to play. He signed with the New York Jets in 1989. He spent that year on their practice squad. A practice squad is a group of players who train with the team. They are ready to play if another player gets hurt.

Becoming a CFL Star

In 1990, Reggie Barnes moved to Canada. He joined the Ottawa Rough Riders in the CFL. He quickly made a big impact. In his first year, he ran for 1,260 yards. He also scored 5 touchdowns. A touchdown is when a player carries the ball into the opponent's end zone.

Because of his great performance, Reggie won the CFL's Most Outstanding Rookie Award. This award goes to the best new player in the league. It was a special year for Ottawa. Their quarterback, Damon Allen, also ran for over 1,000 yards.

Setting Records

Reggie proved his first year was not just luck. In 1991, he had his best season ever. He set a team record for the Rough Riders. He ran for an incredible 1,486 yards. He also scored 10 rushing touchdowns. This was his finest season with the team.

Playing for Different Teams

After his time with the Rough Riders, Reggie played for other CFL teams. He played for the Shreveport Pirates. He also played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Later, he joined the Toronto Argonauts.

Reggie Barnes finished his career back with the Ottawa Rough Riders. He played his last season in 1996. This was also the very last season for the Rough Riders team. It was a fitting way for a fan favorite to end his career.
