Who Was Reginald West?
Reginald West was born on September 5 or 7, 1395. He was the second son of Thomas West, 1st Baron West and Joan La Warre. His mother, Joan, was the daughter of Roger la Warr, 3rd Baron De La Warr.
Reginald had an older brother named Thomas West, 2nd Baron West. He also had a younger brother, John, and a sister, Joan.
Reginald became a baron after his older brother, Thomas, sadly died in an accident at sea in 1416. This made Reginald the 3rd Baron West. Later, in 1427, he also inherited the title of Baron De La Warr when his uncle, Thomas la Warr, 5th Baron De La Warr, passed away.
A Life of Service and Leadership
Reginald West was knighted, which meant he was given the special title of "Sir" for his bravery and service, sometime before 1416. After his brother's death, he took control of the family lands.
He played a role in the wars that England was fighting in France. In 1418 and 1421, he was in charge of the castle of Saint Lo in Normandy. He was also the captain of the fort of La Motte in 1419. Being a captain meant he was a leader in the army, responsible for defending these important locations.
Reginald in Parliament
Reginald was called to join the Parliament, which is like a government meeting, many times. From 1427 to 1429, he was known as Reginaldo la Warre chivaler. From 1432 to 1439, he was called Reginaldo West chivaler.
In 1427, he asked the King and his advisors to let him sit in Parliament with the same high rank that his ancestors, the Lords la Warre, had always held. They had been attending Parliament since the time of King Edward I.
Other Important Roles
Reginald also traveled to France with King Henry VI of England in 1430 and 1431. In 1435, he was given the important job of Justice of the Peace for Sussex. This meant he helped keep law and order in that area.
He received permission to travel to Rome in 1446 with 24 servants. Soon after, he also got permission to travel to the Holy Land. In 1448, he was supposed to travel abroad again for "the King's affairs," meaning he was on a special mission for the King.
Reginald West passed away on August 27, 1450. He was buried in St. Mary's Church in Broadwater, West Sussex, which is now part of the town of Worthing.
