Reinhart Pieter Anne Dozy

Reinhart Pieter Anne Dozy (born February 21, 1820, in Leiden, Netherlands – died April 29, 1883, in Leiden) was a Dutch scholar. He was an expert in the history, language, and literature of the Arab world. He came from a French family called Huguenots.

About Reinhart Dozy

Reinhart Dozy's family, like many other French families, moved to the Netherlands. They came after a time when French Protestants faced difficulties. Some of his family members had settled in the Netherlands as early as 1647.

Dozy studied at the University of Leiden. He earned his highest degree, a doctorate, in 1844. In 1850, he became a special professor of history. He then became a full professor in 1857. Dozy was also a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences starting in 1855.

Dozy's Important Books

Reinhart Dozy spent a lot of time studying Arabic literature, language, and history. In 1847, he published his first big work. It was called The History of the Almohads. This book also included a look at the history of Spain. It covered the time from the Arab conquest until the rule of Yusuf ibn Tashfin and the Almoravids.

This book was a translation of an Arabic history from the 1200s. The original book was by an Almohad historian named Abdelwahid al-Marrakushi. Al-Marrakushi lived in southern Spain for nine years. He also visited Egypt and Mecca. Dozy's translation was reprinted many times.

Other important books by Dozy include:

  • Scriptorum Arabum loci de Abbaditis (1846–1863, 3 volumes).
  • His edition of Ibn Idhari's History of Africa and Spain (1848–1852, 3 volumes). This was a translation of an old manuscript.
  • His book about clothing names, Dictionnaire détaillé des noms des vêtements chez les Arabes (1845). This book won an award.
  • Spanish Islam, A History of the Moslems in Spain (1913). This book talks about the history of Muslims in Spain.
  • Histoire des Musulmans d'Espagne (4 volumes, 1861). This book gave new information about the Moors in Spain.
  • Recherches sur l'histoire politique et littéraire de l'Espagne pendant le moyen âge (2 volumes, 1849). This book looked at the history and literature of Spain in the Middle Ages. It showed how some old stories, like parts of the Cid legends, were not fully true.
  • Supplément aux dictionnaires arabes (1877–1881, 2 volumes). This was a helpful addition to Arabic dictionaries.
  • Glossaire des mots espagnols et portugais, dérivés de l'arabe (1861). This book listed Spanish and Portuguese words that came from Arabic.

  • al-Idrisi's Description de l'Afrique et de l'Espagne (1866). He worked on this with his friend Michael Jan de Goeje.
