Reino Paasilinna was born in a very unusual place: on a ship called Aunus. This ship was in the Arctic Ocean, near the coast of Norway. His family was fleeing during the Winter War. This war happened when the Soviet Union invaded Petsamo, their hometown in Finland. Because of the war, his family moved to Kittilä, a different part of Finland.
Reino had three brothers who also became well-known writers: Erno, Mauri, and Arto Paasilinna.
