The Story of Remedios de Escalada
The town of Remedios de Escalada started in 1873. It was first called Edén Argentino, which means "Argentine Eden." Agustín Eguren created it as a "bedroom community." This means it was a place where people lived and then traveled to work in a bigger city nearby. At first, only a few hundred people lived there.
Growth with the Railroad
The town grew a lot after 1890. The Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway opened a large train yard in a nearby area called Villa Galíndez. This train yard helped the area become a major center for train operations. In 1887, a very old and important group for workers, called La Fraternidad, was started by the workers there. More train facilities opened in 1901. In 1902, the Great Southern Railway opened its first station for people who travel to work every day.
Community and Clubs Form
In 1906, the town's first football club, Club Atlético Talleres de Remedios de Escalada, was formed. This club still plays in the lower leagues of Argentine football. Many Italian Argentines moved to the town. Important people from this community included Luis Máspero, who owned a large hat factory, and Víctor Marangoni, who owned a big metal factory. In 1913, an Italian group for insurance and help was also started here.
New Organizations and City Status
During this time, many important groups called cooperatives opened. These included El Hogar Argentino (1911) and La Internacional (1914). A daily newspaper called La Idea started in 1915. Another important train workers' group, Unión Ferroviaria, was formed in 1921. This group was created to balance the power of La Fraternidad.
The local Roman Catholic church, Nuestra Señora de los Remedios (Our Lady of Remedies), was built in 1924. In 1933, the areas of Villa Galíndez and Argentine Eden were officially combined. They were named Remedios de Escalada. This name honors María de los Remedios de Escalada, who was the wife of General José de San Martín. He was a very important leader in the Argentine War of Independence.
Modern Times and Education
Remedios de Escalada was officially declared a city in 1974 by the government of Buenos Aires Province. Later, a plan to make a big road, the General Paz Freeway, caused problems. Many buildings were torn down for the road, but the project was never finished. This left many empty spaces in the city.
In 1995, the National University of Lanús was opened in Remedios de Escalada. It is one of the national universities in Argentina.
