History of Remerton
Remerton started in 1899. It was built as a "company town" for people working at the Strickland Cotton Mill. The town got its name from a banker named Remer Y. Lane. In 1951, Remerton officially became a town.
Changes Over Time
The Strickland Cotton Mill closed in January 1979. A company called Wipo Inc. bought the mill two months later. They started running it as Sugar Creek Textiles.
During the 1980s, Remerton changed a lot. New apartments were built to attract students from Valdosta State College. New businesses also opened, like a Piggly Wiggly grocery store. In 1985, the L.E. Davis family bought the old mill building. The next year, Fred Wilkinson bought it for his Wilkinson Textile Company.
The Mill Building's Future
On November 1, 2005, Remerton Mills, LLC bought the Strickland Cotton Mill building. This company was led by local businessman Joseph H. Tillman, Sr. In 2006, Remerton Mills, LLC announced plans to fix up the old mill building. They wanted to turn it into homes and shops.
However, in 2012, plans changed. Remerton Mills, LLC decided to tear down the historic mill. Many people and groups who wanted to save old buildings asked them not to. But the demolition of the mill building began in June 2013. There are now plans to build a park where the mill once stood.
