Early Life and Gaming
Maria Creveling grew up in Portland, Maine. Before League of Legends became popular, she enjoyed playing other video games. Some of her favorites were Age of Mythology and GunZ: The Duel.
Her Gaming Career
Before reaching the NA LCS, Remilia played for several semi-professional League of Legends teams. These teams competed in the North American Challenger Series (NA CS). This was a league for teams trying to get into the main NA LCS.
Starting Out in Esports
Remilia joined her first team, Curse Academy, on July 22, 2013. At that time, she used the in-game name "Yuno." She played as their support player in national tournaments. People quickly noticed her amazing skills with the champion Thresh. This led to her getting the nicknames "Madwife" and "Thresh Queen." "Madwife" was a nod to another famous Thresh player, Hong "MadLife" Min-gi.
After leaving Curse Academy in August 2013, Remilia played for several other teams. They all aimed to qualify for the NA CS. On March 9, 2015, she joined a new team called Misfits NA. She also changed her in-game name to "Remilia." This name came from a character named Remilia Scarlet in the Touhou Project game series.
Reaching the Top League
Remilia and her teammates finally made it into the NA CS on June 16, 2015. They won against a team called Magnetic in a big qualifier event. Soon after, Misfits NA changed its name to Renegades. The Renegades team then went on to win the 2015 NA CS Summer Finals. This victory meant they qualified for the 2016 NA LCS Spring Split, the top league in North America.
On January 16, 2016, Maria Creveling made her debut in the NA LCS. She became the first woman and the first transgender player to compete in this major league. For her debut, she used the shorter name "Remi."
Stepping Away and Later Years
After playing for about a third of the season, Remilia suddenly left the starting team. She explained that she felt a lot of pressure while playing on stage. She also faced a lot of mean comments and harassment online. Two years later, she shared more details on Twitter. She revealed that she had serious health issues that caused her a lot of pain while playing.
After taking an eight-month break, Remilia joined a team in Latin America called Kaos Latin Gamers. She played for them from October 2016 to January 2017, using the name "Sakuya." After leaving that team, she started to focus more on streaming her games online. She still played for a few semi-professional teams in the United States before she passed away in late 2019.
Her Passing
Maria Creveling died peacefully in her sleep on December 27, 2019. She was 24 years old. Her death was announced the next day by esports journalist Richard Lewis, who was a close friend.
Many people honored her online. They left kind messages on her Twitch and Twitter pages. They praised her achievements and her lasting impact as the first woman and transgender person to play in the NA LCS. Riot Games, the company that created League of Legends, also released a statement expressing their sadness about her death.
