History of Remington
Early Land Surveys
In the spring of 1839, the southern part of the Town of Remington was surveyed. This happened early because it was close to the Wisconsin River. It also touched an "Indian strip" of land. This land had been sold by the Menominee people to the U.S. government in 1836. This sale was part of an agreement called the Treaty of the Cedars.
Later, in the winter of 1851–1852, a team working for the U.S. government surveyed the eastern half of the town. They walked through the woods and likely crossed frozen marshes. They used tools like a chain and a compass to measure the land.
What the Surveyors Found
After their work, the main surveyor wrote a description of the eastern half of the town. He said that most of the land was flat and swampy. However, there was a narrow strip of drier land along the Yellow River. This drier land was helped by small streams that drained water from the swamps.
The surveyor noted that south of Hemlock Creek and east of the Yellow River, much of the land was open marsh. North of Hemlock Creek and east of the river, the land was low and wet. He thought this wet land could be used for farming if the trees and thick bushes were cleared. West of the Yellow River, the land was mostly Tamarack swamp. He believed that no single section there could be farmed without draining the water.
The trees in the area included Pine and Tamarack. There was also a very thick growth of bushes, including alders and Witch-hazel. The surveyor also mentioned "Wards Mill & improvements near center of Sec. 27."
Town Establishment
The Town of Remington was officially created in 1868. It was named after a community that used to exist within its borders, also called Remington. That community no longer exists today.
