History of the Tower
When the Renaissance Tower was finished in 1974, it was the tallest building in Dallas. It stood 710 ft (220 m) tall. Back then, it was called the First International Bancshares Tower.
In 1985, other buildings like Fountain Place and Bank of America Plaza became taller. To stay important, the Renaissance Tower got a big makeover in 1986. They changed its outside glass and added a tall antenna. This antenna made the building 886 ft (270 m) tall. This helped it become the second-tallest building in Dallas again.
Spider-Man Climbs the Tower
On November 7, 1981, a man named Dan Goodwin climbed the outside of the Renaissance Tower. He was dressed in a Spider-Man suit! He used only suction cups, his hands, and his feet to go up the building.
Goodwin said he climbed the tower as a special gift. He did it for a young boy in Dallas who had a sickness called cystic fibrosis. Goodwin climbed the tower on his 26th birthday.
Businesses in the Tower
Over the years, many companies have had offices in the Renaissance Tower. In 1986, a law firm called Winstead PC moved in. They stayed there for many years before moving to a new location in 2012.
In 1996, Blockbuster Inc., a famous video rental company, thought about moving its main office here. They decided to move into eight floors of the tower. Blockbuster stayed in the Renaissance Tower until 2011.
At the bottom of the building, there is a cool glass pyramid. Inside this pyramid, you can find a two-story food court. This food court connects to other buildings nearby through underground tunnels.
