Early Life and Family Business

René's father, Edoardo Caovilla, was also a shoemaker. He learned from Luigi Voltan, who was one of the first shoemakers in the Riviera del Brenta area. Edoardo loved making high-quality, stylish shoes. He mixed traditional handcrafting with fancy fashion designs. René's mother and four other people used to hand-embroider shoes in a small room. This part of their history is still remembered at the Caovilla factory today.

Learning and Taking Over

In the 1950s, René Caovilla went to study design in Paris and London. After his studies, he came back to Italy to work with his father. By the early 1960s, René took over the family business. He met his future wife, Paola, at a shoe fair. Paola also came from a family that worked in the shoe industry. She helped with public relations and managed the Caovilla handbag line. René focused on making very special and expensive shoes. He became famous for his luxurious evening shoes, known for their beautiful decorations and amazing craftsmanship.

René Caovilla has worked with many famous fashion designers over the years. In the 1970s, he worked with Valentino Garavani. Later, in the 1980s, he collaborated with big fashion houses like Christian Dior and Chanel. In the year 2000, he started creating shoes that looked like jewelry while working with Karl Lagerfeld.
