Family Roots in Shoemaking
René's father, Edoardo Caovilla, was also a talented shoemaker. He learned his craft from Luigi Voltan, who was one of the first shoemakers in the Riviera del Brenta area of Italy. Edoardo loved making high-quality, fancy shoes using special handmade techniques.
René's mother and other workers used to hand-embroider shoes in a small room at their factory. This shows how much care and detail went into their shoes from the very beginning.
René's Journey to Design
In the 1950s, René Caovilla traveled to Paris and London to study design. After his studies, he returned to Italy to work with his father. By the early 1960s, René took over the family business.
Around this time, he met his future wife, Paola, at a shoe fair. Paola also came from a family involved in the footwear industry. She helped with public relations and managed the Caovilla handbag collection. René focused on making very fancy and expensive evening shoes, famous for their beautiful decorations and amazing craftsmanship.
