Renova oscari
Scientific classification

The Renova oscari is a special type of fish known as a killifish. It belongs to a fish group called the Rivulidae family. This fish is only found in one specific place: the Orinoco River area in Venezuela.

This killifish is known as an "annual" fish, which means it usually lives for about a year. It can grow to be about 4.7 centimeters long. Interestingly, the Renova oscari is the only known fish in its entire group, called a genus. Sometimes, you might even see this fish kept as a pet in aquariums.

Discovering Renova oscari

Scientists Jamie E. Thomerson and Donald Charles Taphorn Baechle first officially described this fish in 1995. They found it near the southwestern edge of Isla Raton, close to a village called Sabanita, in the upper part of the Orinoco River.

The second part of the fish's name, oscari, was chosen to honor Oscar León Mata. He was a person who loved collecting killifish, worked as an environmental engineer, and was in charge of the fish collection at the Museo de Ciencias Naturales in Guanare. He lived from 1964 to 2018.
