Repentigny is a city in Quebec, Canada. It is located near Montreal, on the L'Assomption River and the Saint Lawrence River. Repentigny and Charlemagne were the first towns to be built east of Montreal Island. Repentigny is part of the Lanaudière region.

History of Repentigny

How Repentigny Was Founded

Repentigny was founded in 1670 by Jean-Baptiste Le Gardeur. He was the son of a French nobleman named Pierre Le Gardeur. For the first 250 years, only a few hundred farmers lived in Repentigny. It was mostly a farming community. In 1677, the first count of people showed only 30 residents. Benjamin Moreau became the first mayor in 1855.

City Growth and Mergers

On June 1, 2002, Repentigny joined with its nearby city, Le Gardeur. This merger made Repentigny much larger. The city's area grew from 29 to 69 square kilometers. Its population also increased by 70%.

Repentigny was also the starting point of the Chemin du Roy. This historic road goes eastward all the way to Quebec City.

In 2021, Repentigny had a population of 86,100 people. This was a small increase of 2.2% from 2016. The city has about 34,710 homes. The land area is 61.52 square kilometers. This means about 1,399 people live in each square kilometer.

Most residents in 2021 were of European background (81.4%). About 17.6% were from visible minority groups. The largest visible minority groups were Black (9.9%), Arab (3.3%), and Latin American (2.2%).

The city has a main transit hub called the Centre d'Échange Rive Nord-Est. This center is managed by Réseau de transport métropolitain. You can transfer between different bus routes here. Nine out of ten local bus routes use this center. Also, two regional bus lines connect here. This means Repentigny is linked to many other towns. These include Terrebonne, Charlemagne, L'Assomption, and Montreal.
