He continued working with Hassan Hamed until 1991, and he often says that Hamed was his biggest influence.
Television Work
Attaran's first TV appearance was in Bidaaran (1990). He became widely known after starring in Parvaz 57 (1993) and Saat-e Khosh (1994), both directed by Mehran Modiri. He also helped write Saat-e Khosh, which was special for its new storytelling style and helped his acting career grow a lot.
In 1997, Attaran acted in Donya-ye Shirin, a children’s series. He also appeared with famous actors like Khosrow Shakibai and Rambod Javan in Sarzamin-e Sabz.
His first time directing a TV show was with Sib-e Khandeh (1997), a weekly children’s program. In 1998, he acted, wrote, and directed Majid Delbandam. In 1999, Attaran starred in, was the art director for, and wrote Qatar-e Abadi. This was a comedy series that made fun of old stories and also talked about social issues. It was one of the most successful TV shows of the late 1990s.
Cinema Beginnings
Reza Attaran's first movie role was in Key of Marriage (1997). In this film, he acted alongside Alireza Khamseh and Nader Soleimani. The movie was about a man who had to deliver illegal goods to a gang.
2000s: Directing and More TV
Television
In 2000, Attaran was a consultant director and writer for Zire Aseman-e Shahr. The director, Mehran Ghafourian, said that Attaran created all the characters for the show.
In 2002, Attaran acted, directed, and wrote for the comedy series Koucheh Aghaghia. The next year, he did the same for Khaneh Be Doosh. This series had a simple story but talked about important social problems like poverty. Its success led Attaran to use a similar style for Moteham Gorikht (2005). After this, he made a special appearance in Ketabforoushi-e Hodhod (2006). In 2006, he directed, acted, and sang in Torsh o Shirin.
In 2008, Attaran was a consultant director for Se Dar Chahar. That same year, he directed and starred in Bezangah, a special show for Ramadan. Even though his TV shows were very popular, Attaran stopped working with IRIB because of some rules and feeling tired. He still gets offers from IRIB but has not officially worked with them since.
Cinema
In 2000, Attaran starred in his second film, Cinderella. In 2002, he appeared in Kolah Ghermez va Sarvenaz. He also acted in Hoo and Kolah-i Baraye Baran (2006). Critics liked his natural acting in Kolah-i Baraye Baran.
The year 2007 was very busy for Attaran, as he acted in five movies: Tighzan, Quarantine, Khorus Jangi, Towfigh-e Ejbari, and Tasvieh Hesab. His role in Khorus Jangi was especially noted, and many believed his presence helped the movie do well at the box office. In 2009, he starred in Nish-e Zanbour, which earned a lot of money.
In 2010, Attaran played a sergeant in Asb Hayvan-e Najibi Ast, showing a calmer side to his acting. That same year, he starred in Vorood-e Aghayan Mamnoo, which made him even more famous in 2011. For his roles in both Asb Hayvan-e Najibi Ast and Vorood-e Aghayan Mamnoo, Attaran won special awards for Best Actor.
2010s: Movie Success and Box Office King
After the series Bezangah, Reza Attaran mostly stopped working in television. He only helped out as a consultant for other directors sometimes. He also appeared as a guest on a TV show called Gap, where he talked about his life, acting, and marriage.
In 2011, Attaran directed and starred in the movie Khabam Miad. This film was shown at the 30th Fajr Film Festival, where Attaran won the Crystal Simorgh for Best Director. Critics liked how the movie connected with its audience. In the same year, Attaran acted in Bikhod o Bi Jahat. He received an award for Best Actor for this role.
After Bikhod o Bi Jahat, Attaran starred in Che Khoobe Ke Bargashti (2013). He then worked with Behrooz Shoeibi in Dehliz. Attaran was nominated for Best Actor for his role in Dehliz and won the Best Actor award at the 7th Critics Association Awards. In Dehliz, Attaran showed a serious side to his acting, which was different from his usual comedy roles and was well-received by some critics.
In 2013, Attaran also acted in Tabaqe Hassas, which earned a lot of money at the box office. Even though some critics felt the movie could have been funnier, Attaran's acting was highly praised. He won the Crystal Simorgh for Best Actor at the 32nd Fajr Film Festival for this role.
Attaran's movie career continued with roles in Red Carpet and Kalashnikov. He also directed and wrote Red Carpet. Because of his success in Tabaqe Hassas, Red Carpet, and Kalashnikov, Attaran was named the most profitable actor in Iranian cinema in 2014, earning a lot of money from his films.
In 2014, Attaran starred in Nahang-e Anbar, playing a 50-year-old man telling his life story. Despite some weaknesses in the script, Attaran's performance helped make the movie successful. After Nahang-e Anbar, Attaran acted in Ginness and Man Salvador Nistam. He then wrote, directed, and starred in Dracula. His next movie, Abnabat Choobi, was not well-received by critics.
In 2016, Attaran starred in Nahang-e Anbar 2: Selection-e Roya, which became one of the highest-grossing films in Iranian cinema history. Critics noted that Attaran himself was the best part of the film, carrying the weight of the story with his natural charm. Attaran's next film, Khanoum-e Yaya, received negative reviews. He then starred in Mosadereh, which was praised as a good example of a well-made commercial film. Attaran's next role was in Hezarpa, which earned over 30 billion tomans, becoming the highest-grossing film in Iranian cinema history at that time. His successful run included starring in Hezarpa, Nahang-e Anbar 2: Selection-e Roya, Mosadereh, and Man Salvador Nistam, all of which earned a lot of money.
In 2018, Attaran starred in Zir-e Nazar. He also appeared in Azad Mesl-e Hava, Enferadi, and Roshan. For his role in Roshan, he won the Best Actor award at the 39th Fajr Film Festival.
2020s

After taking a break for a year, Attaran starred in the series Ajal-e Moallagh in 2024.
Cinema

Personal Life
Reza Attaran's father, Zabihollah Attaran, once shared that he was against his son becoming an actor at first. He didn't understand the job and thought it wasn't good. But when he saw how much Reza loved art and acting, he told him to follow his passion.
In 1995, Attaran married Farideh Faramarzi, who is also an actress. In an interview, he explained that he and his wife decided not to have children. He said that they both agreed on this before they even got married. Attaran also helps with charity work and visits different charitable organizations. He owns a photography studio in northern Tehran.
Public Appearance
Many people have shared their thoughts about Reza Attaran's acting. Ali Sartipi said that Attaran chooses his projects carefully. Vishka Asayesh noted that people are drawn to watch him even when he doesn't do anything special. Film critic Reza Dorostkar believes Attaran is a charming actor who shines in movies like Hezarpa. Manouchehr Hadi sees him as a unique comedy actor whose natural kindness keeps his humor clean. Mohammad Hossein Farahbakhsh stated that Attaran is special because he can make a slightly funny situation much funnier.
Masoud Farasti commented on Attaran's acting journey, saying that he was once a true comedian in his TV shows. However, over time, he started repeating himself, which made his comedy less surprising.
In 2018, Attaran was named the most profitable actor in Iranian cinema. His three films, Hezarpa, Mosadereh, and Khanoum-e Yaya, earned a lot of money together. Attaran himself said he doesn't like the term "most profitable actor" because it sounds like he's just a money-making machine, and he feels Iranian cinema isn't quite at that level.
Attaran's TV series are very popular with audiences. For example, in Ramadan 2020, Motaham Gorikht was still the most-watched series of the month, even years after it first aired.
