The pound was the money used in the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. This was a group of countries in southern Africa. One pound was divided into 20 shillings. Each shilling was then divided into 12 pence.

History of the Pound

The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland was formed in 1953. A new currency, the Rhodesia and Nyasaland pound, was created in 1955. It replaced the old Southern Rhodesian pound that was used there before. The new pound was worth the same as the old one. It was also worth the same as the British pound.

The Federation broke up at the end of 1963. The three areas became separate British colonies again. In 1964, Nyasaland became independent and was renamed Malawi. Northern Rhodesia also became independent and was renamed Zambia. Southern Rhodesia changed its name to Rhodesia. Each of these new countries then started using their own money. They all kept their new pounds worth the same as the old Rhodesia and Nyasaland pound.

Coins of the Federation

The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland made its own coins. In 1955, a full set of new coins was released. These coins had a picture of Queen Elizabeth II on one side. On the other side, they showed different African animals.

The coins came in values like halfpennies, pennies, threepences, sixpences, shillings, two shilling pieces, and half crowns. Some of the smaller coins, like the halfpennies and pennies, even had a hole in the middle! More coins were made in 1956 and 1957. After that, mostly pennies and halfpennies were produced. Some sixpences were made in 1962 and 1963, and threepences in 1963 and 1964. Even though the Federation ended in 1963, some coins were still made in 1964. Collectors really like the higher value coins because of their cool animal designs.

Banknotes of the Federation

From 1956 to 1961, the Bank of Rhodesia and Nyasaland printed paper money. They made notes for 10 shillings, £1, £5, and £10. These banknotes featured images of Queen Elizabeth II along with famous African animals or landmarks. For example, the 10 shilling note showed an African fish eagle. The £1 note featured a leopard and the ancient ruins of Great Zimbabwe. The £5 note had a sable antelope and the amazing Victoria Falls. The £10 note showed a lion and elephants.
