Ricardo María Carles Gordó (born September 24, 1926 – died December 17, 2013) was an important leader in the Roman Catholic Church. He was a Cardinal and served as the Archbishop of Barcelona in Spain for many years.

Early Life and Education
Ricardo María Carles Gordó was born in Valencia, Spain. He went to school at the Teresian school in Valencia. Later, he finished his high school studies at the Jesuit Colegio de San José.
He then went to the Seminary of Valencia. Here, he was a student at Colegio "Corpus Christi." He continued his studies at the Pontifical University of Salamanca. In 1953, he earned a degree in canon law, which is the law of the Church.
Becoming a Priest and Bishop
On June 29, 1951, Ricardo Carles Gordó became a priest. After his studies, he worked in different roles in the Church in Valencia.
- He was a parish priest, which means he led a local church community.
- He was also a leader for the Catholic Youth Workers group.
- He helped guide new priests and families in the Church.
In 1969, he was chosen to be the Bishop of Tortosa. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Church who oversees a specific area.
Archbishop and Cardinal
Ricardo Carles Gordó became the Archbishop of Barcelona in 1990. An archbishop leads a larger area called an archdiocese. He held this important position until 2004.
In 1994, Pope John Paul II made him a Cardinal. Cardinals are very important advisors to the Pope. He was given the title of Cardinal-Priest of Santa Maria Consolatrice al Tiburtino.
As a cardinal, he was one of the Church leaders who helped choose the next Pope. He took part in the 2005 papal conclave. This was the meeting where Pope Benedict XVI was chosen as the new Pope.
Later Years and Death
Ricardo María Carles Gordó retired from his role as Archbishop in 2004. He passed away on December 17, 2013.
