Richard Mayew (born around 1439 or 1440, died in 1516), also known as Mayo, was an important English scholar. He became a Bishop of Hereford from 1504 to 1516. He also worked as a diplomat for Henry VII of England, helping the king with important tasks.

Early Life and Education

Richard Mayew was born in a town called Hungerford in Berkshire, England. He was a very smart student and went to the University of Oxford.

He became a Fellow at New College, Oxford. A fellow is like a senior member or teacher at a college. Later, he became the President of Magdalen College, Oxford. This was a very important job, like being the head of the college. He held this position from 1480 to 1507.

Mayew also had big roles at the whole University of Oxford. He was the Vice-Chancellor in 1484 and 1485. This means he helped run the university. In 1502, he became the Chancellor of the University of Oxford, which was the highest leader of the university.

His Church Career

Richard Mayew was also a significant figure in the church. He became an Archdeacon in two different areas: Archdeacon of Oxford in 1493 and Archdeacon of the East Riding in 1501. An archdeacon is a senior church official who helps the bishop manage a part of the diocese.

In 1504, he was chosen to be the Bishop of Hereford. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Christian church. At the same time, he also became the Lord Almoner. This was a special role where he was in charge of giving out money or gifts to the poor on behalf of the king.

Working for the King

Besides his church duties, Richard Mayew also served as a diplomat for King Henry VII. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in talks with other countries.

In 1501, he was part of a special group that traveled to Spain. Their mission was to bring Catherine of Aragon to England. Catherine was going to marry Prince Arthur, who was King Henry VII's son. This important journey was even shown in special woven pictures called tapestries.

Where He Rests

Richard Mayew passed away in 1516. He was buried at Hereford Cathedral, a beautiful and historic church.
