History of Richfield
Richfield has an interesting past, from a quickly growing town to a smaller community today.
Early Days
Richfield was officially planned out, or platted, in 1885. It was named for its fertile land, which means the soil was very good for farming. The town grew very fast! In less than a year, about 600 people moved to Richfield.
In 1886, Morton County was created, and Richfield became the county seat. This meant it was the main town where the county government was located.
Challenges and Changes
By 1900, the number of people living in Richfield had dropped to just 61.
In the 1930s, the area faced a huge challenge called the Dust Bowl. This was a time when severe dust storms hit the Great Plains. It made life very hard for farmers and caused big economic problems, especially during the Great Depression.
In 1961, the county seat was moved from Richfield to Elkhart. Since then, Richfield has continued to be an important place for people in the nearby countryside. It provides basic services like a school, post office, fire and police services, food, and fuel.
