In 1886, Morton County was created, and Richfield became the county seat. This meant it was the main town where the county government was located.

In the 1930s, the area faced a huge challenge called the Dust Bowl. This was a time when severe dust storms hit the Great Plains. It made life very hard for farmers and caused big economic problems, especially during the Great Depression.

In 1961, the county seat was moved from Richfield to Elkhart. Since then, Richfield has continued to be an important place for people in the nearby countryside. It provides basic services like a school, post office, fire and police services, food, and fuel.
