Richmond, also known as Waimea in Māori, is a town in New Zealand. It's where the Tasman District Council has its main office. The town is about 13 kilometers (8 miles) south of Nelson on the South Island, close to the bottom of Tasman Bay.
Europeans first settled here in 1842. The town was named in 1854 after Richmond on Thames, a town near London. As of June 2023, Richmond has an estimated population of 19,200 people.
Even though most of Richmond is outside Nelson City and is seen as its own urban area, it's part of the bigger Nelson metropolitan area. This area also includes nearby places like Brightwater, Hope, Māpua, and Wakefield. The two main local governments, Nelson and Tasman, work together to promote tourism. Richmond is also part of the Nelson parliamentary electorate.

History of Richmond
Early Administration (1853-1876)
From 1853 to 1876, the Richmond area was managed as part of Nelson Province. This was a time when New Zealand was divided into different provinces, each with its own government.
Waimea County and Richmond Borough
In 1876, the Provinces Act ended the provincial system. Because of this, Waimea County was created in January 1877. Richmond became part of Waimea County and was its main administrative center.
Later, in 1891, the town of Richmond got its own local government. The Richmond Borough Council took over managing the urban area of Richmond from Waimea County.
Forming Tasman District
The Richmond Borough continued until 1989. That year, major changes happened in local government. The Tasman District was formed by combining Richmond Borough with other areas like Golden Bay County, Murchison County, and Waimea County.
