How Rincón Became Part of the United States
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a deal called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States. This means it is governed by the U.S. but is not a state.
In 1899, the United States government counted all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that Rincón and a nearby barrio called Monte Llano had a combined population of 1,374 people.
