History of Ringsted

Ringsted was officially planned and laid out in 1899. It was named after a city in Ringsted, Denmark. This was the home country of one of the first people to settle in the area.

Danish Heritage and Churches

Ringsted is well-known for its strong Danish-American and Lutheran community. The first church, St. Ansgar Danish Lutheran Church, was started by the city's founders in 1882.

In 1894, the Danish Lutheran community faced a disagreement. This was about how to interpret religious teachings and whether activities like dancing were acceptable. This led to the community splitting into two groups. They were nicknamed "Happy Danes" and "Sad Danes."

A folk dance group called "The Happy Dancing Danes" became popular in the 1940s. They got this name because the "Happy Danes" believed dancing was not wrong. The two church groups eventually came back together in 2007.

Schools in Ringsted

Public schools in Ringsted are managed by the North Union Community School District. This district was created on July 1, 2014. It formed when two older school districts, the Armstrong–Ringsted Community School District and the Sentral Community School District, joined together.

The Sentral Community School District itself was formed earlier, on July 1, 1979. That was when the Armstrong and Ringsted school districts merged.
