A Look at Ringsted's History
Ringsted was once a very important meeting place called Sjællands Landsting. This was a special assembly where people gathered to make laws and settle disputes during the Middle Ages. It was like an early court or parliament for the region.
In 1584, this assembly moved to the famous St. Bendt's Church. It was then known as Sjællandsfar Landsting. Later, in 1805, it moved to Copenhagen and changed its name to Østre Landsret. It still operates today under that name.
Important Events in Ringsted's Past
A sad event happened near Ringsted in 1131. A person named Canute Lavard was killed in the Haraldsted forest. This event led to a period of civil war in Denmark.
The beautiful St. Bendt's Church was officially opened in 1170. In front of the church, there is a large town square. This square leads to many shopping streets filled with stores and boutiques.
The city's official symbol, or coat of arms, dates back to 1421. People have discussed what it means for a long time. The traditional idea is that it shows the hand of God at the top. Below that, it shows Virgin Mary with Jesus. Three figures are around them, worshipping her.
Today, the city officially says the three figures are Saint Canute Lavard, King Eric Plovpenning, and Saint Benedict of Nursia.
