The Mountain's Name
The Blackfeet people consider the Two Medicine region of Glacier National Park to be a very special and sacred place. Their original name for the mountain was "Mahkuyi-opuahsin". This name means "The way the wolf gets up" and was later translated into the name we use today: Rising Wolf Mountain.
How it Got its English Name
Rising Wolf Mountain was named after a man named Hugh Monroe. He was a fur trader who lived with the Pikuni people, a branch of the Blackfeet Nation. The Pikuni people gave him the name Rising Wolf.
After Hugh Monroe passed away, his close friend, an author named James Willard Schultz, decided to name the mountain in Monroe's honor. This is how the mountain officially became known as Rising Wolf Mountain.
