The River Brant is a river in Lincolnshire, England. It's about 14 miles (23 km) long and flows into the River Witham. Back in 1855, people described the River Brant as a small stream. They said it started from several springs near Hough-on-the-Hill. It then flowed north, west of some higher land.

What's in a Name?

The name Brant comes from an old English word. This word meant "steep" or "deep." It likely described a steeply sloping area near the river.

Where the River Flows

The Brant River starts on the side of Summerfields Hill. This is southwest of Gelston, near Hough-on-the-Hill. The river then curves and flows mostly north. It runs next to the Lincolnshire Edge, which is a line of limestone hills.

The river flows past Brandon. This village actually gets its name from the river! Next, it reaches Stragglethorpe. Here, another stream called The Beck joins it. The Beck drains water from Fulbeck.

At Brant Broughton, the river meets its biggest helper, the Sand Beck. The Brant then keeps flowing north. It passes through the Low Fields near Navenby, Boothby Graffoe, and Coleby. Here, it flows west of an old, empty medieval village called Skinnand. It also passes the remains of Somerton Castle.

Further north, the River Brant finally meets the River Witham. This meeting point is between the villages of Aubourn and South Hykeham.
