The River Kym is a small but important river located in Cambridgeshire, England. It starts its journey near Newton Bromswold and flows through several interesting places like Tilbrook and Kimbolton. Eventually, the River Kym joins a much larger river called the Great Ouse near the town of St Neots. In its earliest parts, the River Kym is sometimes called the River Til.

Where the River Kym Flows

The River Kym begins its journey right on the border between Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire. It starts near a place called Newton Bromswold. From there, it flows north-east and enters Bedfordshire near Yielden.

The river then crosses into Cambridgeshire at the village of Tilbrook. It turns towards the south-east and actually flows right through the middle of the town of Kimbolton. You can even see it pass by the famous Kimbolton Castle.

After Kimbolton, the river continues past Stonely. It then flows west of the parish church of St Andrew near Great Staughton. The river curves around the south side of this village. Finally, the River Kym flows into the Great Ouse just north of St Neots. Here, it forms the natural boundary between St Neots and Little Paxton.

The Story Behind the Name

The name of the River Kym is quite interesting! It seems the river was actually named after the town of Kimbolton, not the other way around. The name "Kimbolton" means "the farmstead of a man named Cynebald." So, people likely started calling the river "Kym" because it flowed through the town of Kimbolton.
