The River Maigue (which means "river of the plain" in Irish) is a river in Ireland. It starts in the Milford area of north County Cork. The River Maigue is about 62 kilometers (38.75 miles) long. It collects water from an area of 1,000 square kilometers (about 386 square miles).
Smaller rivers like the River Glen and the larger River Loobagh join the Maigue in south County Limerick. The Maigue then flows north through the town of Bruree. After Bruree, the River Morning Star adds its water to the Maigue. The river continues through Croom and Adare. Finally, it flows into the Shannon Estuary near Kildimo and Clarina, just west of Limerick city. The River Maigue has tides that reach all the way up to the N21 Road Bridge in Adare.

River Maigue: A Look at Its Past
In very old times, the Maigue River was important to the lands of the O'Donovan family and other groups who lived there before them. Many towns and villages along the river were once strong forts. Later, another powerful family, the FitzGerald dynasty, took over these lands.
A beautiful, slow Irish song called ‘Slán le Máigh’ was written about the river. A poet named Aindrias Mac Craith, who lived in the 1700s, wrote this song. He was from the local area. People still sing this song today, and it is also played as a gentle tune.
Meet the Rivers That Join the Maigue
The River Maigue gets bigger as other smaller rivers flow into it. These smaller rivers are called tributaries.
The Loobagh River: A Home for Fish
The Loobagh River (which means "The Twisted One" in Irish) is a great place for fish. Many Trout and Salmon live in its waters. This river starts in the hills south of Kilfinane and flows through the town of Kilmallock. It joins the Maigue River south of Bruree.
The Morning Star River: Flowing Through Farmland
The Morning Star is a smaller river. It flows west through rich farmland. It passes through the towns of Bruff and Athlacca. This river then joins the Maigue just north of Bruree.
The Camogue River: Joining Upstream of Croom
The River Camogue flows towards the west. It goes through areas like Grange, Meanus, and Manister. This river meets the Maigue River before it reaches the town of Croom.
