The River Petteril is a river that flows through the beautiful county of Cumbria in England. It's an important part of the local landscape. This river starts its journey in the countryside and eventually joins a much larger river.

The Petteril's Journey

The River Petteril begins its life near the villages of Penruddock and Motherby. From there, the young river flows towards the southeast. It passes through several small towns and villages. These include Greystoke, Blencow, and Newton Reigny.

Flowing North

After passing these places, the Petteril goes under the M6 motorway. This is a big road that connects many parts of England. Once it's past the motorway, the river turns and starts flowing north. The M6 motorway then follows the river's path for a long way. They both head towards the city of Carlisle.

Reaching Carlisle

When the Petteril reaches Carlisle, it flows through the southeastern part of the city. It acts like a natural border, separating areas like Harraby, Upperby, and Botcherby. The river also runs right next to the West Coast Main Line. This is a very busy railway track!

Joining the Eden

Finally, the River Petteril meets the River Eden. The Eden is a much bigger river. Together, they continue their journey all the way to the Solway Firth. The Solway Firth is a large bay on the coast of the Irish Sea.

River Branches

Along its path, the Petteril is joined by several smaller rivers and streams. These are called tributaries. Some of the main tributaries that flow into the Petteril include:

  • The River North Petteril
  • Stony Beck
  • Calthwaite Beck
  • Blackrack Beck
  • Woodside Beck

These smaller waterways help to feed the Petteril, making it bigger as it flows along.
