The South Esk River

The South Esk is one of Scotland's beautiful rivers. It flows entirely within the region of Angus. The river is known for its scenic journey from the mountains to the sea.

From Mountains to the Sea

The South Esk river begins its journey at a place called Loch Esk. This loch is located in Glen Doll, high in the Grampian Mountains. It's about 730 meters (2,395 feet) above sea level! From there, the river flows through several areas.

It passes through Glen Clova. Then it reaches Strathmore near Cortachy. This is about 5 kilometers (3 miles) north of Kirriemuir. The river continues its path past the town of Brechin. Finally, it empties into the North Sea at Montrose.

A Name with History

The name of the South Esk river is quite old. It has even given its name to a special title. This title is the Earl of Southesk. It is held by a noble family called the Clan Carnegie. This shows how important the river has been to the history of the area.
