The Rivière aux Canots Est is a river in Quebec, Canada. It's like a smaller stream that flows into a bigger river called the Rivière aux Canots. This river runs through areas that aren't officially organized into towns, like Lac-Achouakan and Lac-Moncouche. These places are part of the Lac-Saint-Jean-Est Regional County Municipality in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region.

The Rivière aux Canots Est also flows through the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve. This is a special protected area for nature. You can get to the river's valley using Route 169 and other smaller forest roads. These roads are mainly used for logging and for people visiting for fun, like camping or fishing.

The most important activity in this valley is forestry, which means cutting down trees for wood. After that, tourism, like hiking and enjoying nature, is the next big activity. The river usually freezes over from early December to late March. It's generally safe to walk or play on the ice from mid-December to mid-March.

Where Does the River Flow?

The Rivière aux Canots Est starts at a lake called Lac Bonjour. This lake is about 0.9 kilometers long and sits high up at 669 meters above sea level. It's located in a forest area within the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve. Lac Bonjour gets its water from smaller streams flowing in from other lakes nearby, like Lake Calderly and Lac des Hannetons.

The source of the river is:

  • About 1.7 kilometers southwest of Route 169.
  • About 2.6 kilometers northwest of the top of Mount Apica, which is a tall mountain.
  • About 7.6 kilometers northeast of where the Rivière aux Canots Est joins the main Rivière aux Canots.

From Lac Bonjour, the Rivière aux Canots Est flows for about 10.2 kilometers. As it flows, it drops about 109 meters in height. The entire journey is through forested areas. Along its way, it picks up water from other small streams and lakes, like Gauthier stream, Lake Plutus, and Lac des Pâturins. It also flows through an unnamed lake before reaching its end.

Where the River Ends

The Rivière aux Canots Est eventually flows into the northeast side of the Rivière aux Canots. This meeting point is:

  • About 1.4 kilometers northwest of Lac Lampron.
  • About 9.3 kilometers southwest of Route 169.

Once the Rivière aux Canots Est joins the main Rivière aux Canots, the water continues its journey. It flows for about 24.1 kilometers generally west. Then, it joins the Rivière aux Écorces for about 52.8 kilometers, heading north. After that, it flows into the Pikauba River for about 10.6 kilometers, still going north.

The water then crosses Kenogami Lake for about 17.6 kilometers, moving northeast. From there, it follows the Chicoutimi River for about 26.2 kilometers to the east and northeast. Finally, it joins the mighty Saguenay River for about 114.6 kilometers, flowing east all the way to Tadoussac. At Tadoussac, the Saguenay River empties into the huge Saint Lawrence estuary.

River's Name
