Robert McVicar (born January 15, 1982) is a former professional ice hockey goalie from Canada. He played one game in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Vancouver Canucks. Before joining the pros, he played for the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League. The Canucks picked him in the 2002 NHL Draft.

Robert became a professional player in 2003. He played in minor leagues like the American Hockey League (AHL) and ECHL. On December 1, 2005, he played his only NHL game for the Canucks. He was on the ice for 3 minutes against the Edmonton Oilers. After that, he played in minor leagues for four more seasons. He stopped playing hockey in 2009. Later, he became a financial planner and stockbroker.

Becoming a Hockey Player

Robert McVicar was born in Hay River, Northwest Territories. When he was four years old, his family moved to Brandon, Manitoba. His older brother, Jason, was a goalie, and Robert decided to follow in his footsteps.

Robert was a big fan of the local Brandon Wheat Kings. This team plays in the Western Hockey League (WHL), which is a major junior league for young players. The Wheat Kings chose Robert in their 1997 bantam draft. He spent a year playing for the team's midget club.

Playing in Junior Leagues

After that, Robert played one season with the Trail Smoke Eaters. This team is part of the British Columbia Hockey League. Then, he went back to Brandon. He played his first full season with the Wheat Kings as a backup goalie.

He was offered a scholarship to the University of Maine in 2000. However, the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) said he couldn't play there. So, he returned to the Brandon Wheat Kings in November of that year. The team had three goalies, so Robert didn't play much at first. But for the 2001–02 season, he became the main starting goalie.

Drafted by the NHL

After the 2001-02 season, the Vancouver Canucks picked Robert in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He was the 151st player chosen overall. Robert stayed with the Brandon Wheat Kings for one more year before he became a professional player.

Professional Career

From 2003 to 2006, Robert mostly played for the Manitoba Moose in the American Hockey League (AHL). The AHL is a league just below the NHL.

He also played some games in the ECHL. In the 2003-04 season, he played 19 games for the Columbia Inferno. During the 2005-06 season, he played 33 games for the Victoria Salmon Kings.

His NHL Game

Robert McVicar played his only NHL game on December 1, 2005. It was for the Vancouver Canucks against the Edmonton Oilers. He played for 3 minutes in that game and didn't have to face any shots.

Later Years in Hockey

After his time with the Canucks, Robert continued to play in different leagues.

  • In the 2006–07 season, he played for the Utah Grizzlies in the ECHL.
  • For the 2007-08 season, he played in the Central Hockey League (CHL) for the Arizona Sundogs.
  • He signed with Totempo HvIK in Denmark for the 2008–09 season.
  • His last season playing hockey was spent in Germany.

Life After Hockey

After he stopped playing hockey, Robert McVicar moved to Regina, Saskatchewan. He lives there with his wife, Laurie, and their two children. He now works as a certified financial planner and stockbroker for Edward Jones Investments.
