Robert McVicar (born January 15, 1982) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goalie. He played one game in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Vancouver Canucks. This happened during the 2005–06 hockey season.

Before playing professionally, McVicar was a goalie for the Brandon Wheat Kings. This team is part of the Western Hockey League, which is a major junior league. The Vancouver Canucks picked him in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He became a professional player in 2003. He played in minor leagues like the American Hockey League (AHL) and the ECHL.

On December 1, 2005, he got to play in his only NHL game. It was against the Edmonton Oilers, and he played for 3 minutes. After that, he continued playing in the minor leagues for four more seasons. He stopped playing hockey in 2009. Later, he became a financial planner and a stockbroker.

Robert McVicar's Hockey Journey

Robert McVicar was born in Hay River, Northwest Territories. When he was four years old, his family moved to Brandon, Manitoba. His older brother Jason was a goalie, and Robert decided to follow in his footsteps.

He was a big fan of the local Brandon Wheat Kings team. In 1997, the Wheat Kings chose him in their bantam draft. He spent one year playing for the team's midget club.

Early Career and College Plans

McVicar played one season with the Trail Smoke Eaters. This team is in the British Columbia Hockey League. After that, he returned to Brandon. He spent his first season with the Wheat Kings as a backup goalie.

He was offered a scholarship to the University of Maine in 2000. However, the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) said he couldn't play there. So, he went back to Brandon in November of that year. The team had three goalies, so McVicar played limited time that season.

Becoming a Starter and NHL Draft

For the 2001–02 WHL season, McVicar became the main starting goalie. After that season, the Vancouver Canucks picked him in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He was the 151st player chosen overall. McVicar stayed with the Brandon Wheat Kings for one more year. Then, he officially became a professional hockey player.

Playing in the Minor Leagues and NHL Debut

From 2003 to 2006, McVicar mostly played in the American Hockey League (AHL). He played for the Manitoba Moose. He also played 19 games in the ECHL for the Columbia Inferno during the 2003–04 season. In the 2005–06 season, he played 33 games in the ECHL for the Victoria Salmon Kings.

His big moment came during the 2005–06 NHL season. On December 1, 2005, he played his only NHL game for the Vancouver Canucks. It was against the Edmonton Oilers. He was on the ice for 3 minutes and did not face any shots.

After his NHL appearance, McVicar continued playing in other leagues. In the 2006–07 season, he played for the Utah Grizzlies in the ECHL. During the 2007–08 season, he played in the Central Hockey League (CHL) for the Arizona Sundogs. He then signed with Totempo HvIK for the 2008–09 season. His last season playing hockey was spent in Germany.

Life After Hockey

After he stopped playing hockey in 2009, Robert McVicar moved to Regina, Saskatchewan. He lives there with his wife, Laurie, and their two children. He started a new career as a certified financial planner and stockbroker. He works for Edward Jones Investments.
