What is Robbery?
Robbery is different from simple stealing. In a robbery, the person taking items uses threats or violence. This means they might scare someone or hurt them to get what they want. If a robber uses weapons like a gun, it is called armed robbery.
Famous Robberies and Robbers
Throughout history, some robberies and robbers have become very well known. One famous event was the Great Train Robbery in England in 1963. This was a large-scale train heist.
Many robbers have also become infamous, meaning they are known for their bad deeds. In America, a famous robber was Jesse James. In Australia, robbers were often called bushrangers. A well-known Australian bushranger was Ben Hall.
Where Does the Word "Rob" Come From?
The word "rob" has an interesting history. It comes from an old Latin word, deraubare. This word itself came from a German word raub, which meant "clothes". Long ago, before clothes were made in factories and became cheap, they were very valuable. Robbers would often take a person's clothes because they were worth a lot.
