Early Life and Background

Robert Allenby was born in Melbourne, Australia, on July 12, 1971. His family has roots in England, as his father was born in Leeds.

Becoming a Professional Golfer

Allenby became a professional golfer in 1992. He quickly found success. In his first year, he was the top player on the PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit. He achieved this again in 1994. He has won 13 times in Australia, including the Victorian Open when he was still an amateur.

He also started playing on the European Tour. This was his main tour until 1998. He won four tournaments on the European Tour. Three of these wins happened in 1996. That year, he finished third on the Order of Merit, which ranks the best players. He has also been ranked among the top 20 golfers in the world.

Playing in the United States

Robert Allenby now mostly plays in the U.S. on the PGA Tour. He joined the tour in 1999. In 2000, he won two big tournaments: the Shell Houston Open and the Advil Western Open. He won two more events the next year, in 2001. In both 2000 and 2001, he finished 16th on the money list, earning a lot of prize money.

Even though he hasn't won on the PGA Tour since 2001, he continued to play well. He finished in the top 50 players each year from 2002 to 2004. His best result in a major championship was tied for seventh place at the U.S. Open in 2004.

In 2005, Robert Allenby made history. He was the first golfer to win the "triple crown" in Australia. This means he won the Australian Masters, Australian PGA, and Australian Open all in the same year.

Team Play and Recent Career

Allenby has represented the International Team in the Presidents Cup several times. He played in 1994, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2009, and 2011.

In December 2009, he became the first Australian to win the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa. He won against Henrik Stenson in a playoff. This was his first professional win in four years. He then won his fourth Australian PGA Championship title the very next week.

In February 2012, Allenby almost won a PGA Tour event after a long time. He had a two-stroke lead going into the last hole of the Mayakoba Golf Classic. However, he made a double bogey, which meant he had to go into a playoff with rookie John Huh. He lost the playoff on the eighth extra hole.
