Robert Brudenell (born September 20, 1726 – died October 20, 1768) was an important figure in British history. He was an army officer who served in the military. He also worked as a Member of Parliament, which means he helped make laws for the country.

Early Life and Family

Robert Brudenell was born into a very important family. His father was the 3rd Earl of Cardigan. An Earl is a high-ranking noble. Robert was the third son in his family. He had two older brothers. One brother became the 1st Duke of Montagu. The other became the 5th Earl of Cardigan.

Robert went to school at Winchester College. This is a famous old school in England. He then studied at Oriel College, Oxford, which is part of the well-known University of Oxford. In 1759, he married Anne Bishopp. Her father was Sir Cecil Bishopp, 6th Baronet.

Military Career

Robert Brudenell had a successful career in the British army. In 1748, he became an Ensign. This was his first rank in the First Foot Guards. The Foot Guards are a special part of the army.

He quickly moved up through the ranks:

  • In 1751, he became a Captain.
  • In 1758, he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel.
  • By 1762, he reached the rank of Colonel.

In 1763, he became the Colonel of the 16th Regiment of Foot. A regiment is a large group of soldiers. He stayed with this regiment until 1765. Then, he was transferred to lead the 4th Regiment of Foot.

Other Important Roles

Besides his military duties, Robert Brudenell held other important positions. From 1752, he was the Lieutenant-Governor of Windsor Castle. This is a famous royal castle in England. He helped manage the castle.

Later, in 1766, he became the Vice-Chamberlain to Queen Charlotte. She was the wife of King George III. He worked for the Queen until he passed away.

Political Life

Robert Brudenell also served in the British Parliament. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for two different areas.

  • From 1756 to 1761, he represented Great Bedwyn.
  • From 1761 until his death in 1768, he represented Marlborough.

Even though he was an MP, he was not very interested in politics. His main goal was to advance in his military career. So, he usually supported the government that was in power. This way, he made sure his army career would not be affected.

Family Legacy

Robert Brudenell passed away before his older brothers. His brothers did not have any children. Because of this, Robert's son, also named Robert, became the 6th Earl of Cardigan. This meant the title stayed in the family.
