Robert Covington (born December 14, 1990) is an American professional basketball player. He last played for the Philadelphia 76ers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Tennessee State Tigers. In 2018, he was chosen for the NBA All-Defensive First Team. This means he was one of the best defensive players in the league.

Early Basketball Days
High School Success
Robert Covington went to Proviso West High School in Hillside, Illinois. In his final year (2008–09), he was amazing. He scored about 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds per game. He also blocked seven shots per game.
He was named the West Suburban Conference Player of the Year. He led his team to win the West Suburban Championship. He also made the All-Area and All-Conference first teams.
College Career at Tennessee State
Covington played college basketball at Tennessee State.
- Freshman Year (2009-10): He was named to the Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomer team. He also earned Mid-Major Freshman All-America honors. He averaged 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
- Sophomore Year (2010-11): He had eight games where he scored double-digits in points and rebounds. He led his team in rebounds (7.5 per game). He also led the OVC in three-point shooting (46%). He was named second-team All-OVC.
- Junior Year (2011-12): He was named first-team All-OVC. He was also the OVC co-MVP by CollegeInsider.com. He averaged 17.8 points and 7.9 rebounds per game.
- Senior Year (2012-13): He was again named second-team All-OVC. He averaged 17.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. He finished his college career with 1,749 points and 876 rebounds. These numbers put him high on Tennessee State's all-time lists.
Professional Basketball Journey
Starting with the Houston Rockets (2013–2014)
After college, Robert Covington was not chosen in the 2013 NBA draft. But he joined the Houston Rockets for their Summer League team. In July 2013, he signed a contract with the Rockets.
He spent most of the 2013–14 season in the NBA G League (then called the NBA Development League). He played for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. He only played in seven NBA games that season.
In February 2014, he played in the NBA D-League All-Star Game. He scored a record 33 points and was named the MVP of the game. In April, he was named the NBA D-League Rookie of the Year. He averaged 23.2 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 2.4 steals per game for the Vipers. The Rockets later let him go in October 2014.
Time with the Philadelphia 76ers (2014–2018)
On November 15, 2014, Covington signed a five-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. He quickly showed his skills. On December 5, he scored 21 points against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The next day, he scored 25 points against the Detroit Pistons.
In the 2015–16 season, Covington became known for his defense. He led the NBA in steals per game in December. He had six or more steals in three games in a row. This was a rare achievement. On November 27, he scored a career-high 28 points and had eight steals. On December 1, he helped the 76ers win a game, ending a long losing streak. He scored a new career high of 29 points in February 2016. He later scored 30 points in April.

In the 2016–17 season, Covington continued to play well. On December 14, 2016, he had 26 points and 12 rebounds. On January 20, 2017, he made two three-pointers in the last 40 seconds to help the 76ers win a close game. He missed the end of the season due to a knee injury.
In the 2017–18 season, he scored 29 points in the first game. On November 13, he scored a season-high 31 points. Later that month, he signed a new four-year contract with the 76ers. In May 2018, he was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team. This showed he was one of the best defenders in the NBA.
Moving to the Minnesota Timberwolves (2018–2020)
On November 12, 2018, Covington was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He played well for them, scoring 13 points in his first game. However, he got a knee injury in December 2018. He missed many games and had surgery in April 2019. This ended his season.
Back with the Houston Rockets (2020)
On February 5, 2020, Covington was traded back to the Houston Rockets. In his first game back, he scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds. On February 29, he had 16 points, 16 rebounds, and three blocks in an overtime win.
Playing for the Portland Trail Blazers (2020–2022)
On November 22, 2020, Covington was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers. He played for them for about two seasons.
Time with the Los Angeles Clippers (2022–2023)
On February 4, 2022, Covington was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. On April 1, he had an amazing game, scoring a career-high 43 points. He also made 11 three-pointers in that game. This set a new record for the Clippers team. In May, he signed a new two-year contract with the Clippers.
Return to Philadelphia (2023–2024)
On November 1, 2023, Robert Covington was traded back to the Philadelphia 76ers. This was his second time playing for the team.
