Robert Hamilton Lloyd-Anstruther (born April 21, 1841 – died August 24, 1914) was a British army officer and a Conservative Party politician. He led an interesting life, serving in the military and later helping to govern his local area.

Early Life and Military Service

Robert was the son of Captain James Hamilton Lloyd-Anstruther. He trained to be an officer at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. This was a special school for future army leaders.

In 1858, Robert joined the Rifle Brigade as an ensign. This was a junior officer rank. He quickly saw action in a major conflict in India.

He continued to rise through the army ranks. In 1862, he became a lieutenant. He also fought in battles in Canada in 1866. These battles were against a group called the Fenians.

By 1872, he was promoted to captain. In 1871, he married Gertrude Louisa Georgiana Fitzroy.

Important Army Roles

Robert served as a teacher for soldiers in the South Eastern District. In 1881, he became an aide de camp. This means he was a personal assistant to a high-ranking general, Edward Newdegate, in a place called Natal (now part of South Africa).

He retired from the army for a short time that same year. However, he soon returned to service. He was promoted to major and showed great bravery in a military campaign in 1885. This was called the Suakin Expedition.

Later in 1885, he retired from the army for good. He held the honorary rank of lieutenant-colonel in the Suffolk Rifle Volunteer Corps.

A Career in Politics

After his military career, Robert decided to enter politics. In the 1886 general election, he ran for a seat in the UK Parliament.

He was chosen by the Conservative Party to represent the Woodbridge area of Suffolk. The person holding the seat was Robert Lacey Everett from the Liberal Party.

Robert Lloyd-Anstruther won the election and became a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is someone elected to represent their local area in the government. He served for one term. In the 1892 election, Robert Lacey Everett won the seat back.

Later Life and Local Service

In 1882, Robert inherited Hintlesham Hall, a large estate near Ipswich in Suffolk. This happened after his father passed away.

He also became involved in local government. He served as an alderman on the East Suffolk County Council. An alderman is a senior member of a local council.

He was also appointed a justice of the peace. This meant he helped with local legal matters. He also became a deputy lieutenant of Suffolk. This was an important ceremonial role.

Robert Hamilton Lloyd-Anstruther passed away in 1914. He was survived by his wife and one son, Fitzroy Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe. His son later became a baronet, which is a special title.
