Robert Hottot's African Adventure

In 1908 and 1909, Robert Hottot planned a big trip. He worked with the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris, which is a famous museum about nature. His goal was to explore along the mighty Congo River all the way to Lake Chad in Africa. Another explorer named Léon Poutrin was part of this exciting expedition.

Life After the Expedition

After his journey and getting married, Robert Hottot lived in different places. He lived in various parts of France, then moved to Jersey, an island, and finally settled in Oxford, England.

Hottot's Contributions to Science

Robert Hottot was very interested in learning about people and nature. He was even the leader of the Oxford University Anthropological Society for a time. This group studies human societies and cultures. He was also a member of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, another important group for studying people.

Where Are His Discoveries Now?

Hottot collected many interesting things during his travels. These included items related to animals, plants, and different cultures. Most of his collections are kept in Paris at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle and the Musée du quai Branly. These museums help us learn about the world.

A smaller collection of insects that he found in Equatorial Africa can be seen at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. Also, some of his old papers from the expedition and special early 3D photographs are stored at the Pitt Rivers Museum. These items help us understand what his expeditions were like long ago.
