Robert's Running Journey
Robert comes from a place called Bomet in Kenya. His first big international race was the 2008 Frankfurt Marathon. He wasn't very experienced then. He even had to pay for his own trip! He needed to finish the race in under 2 hours and 14 minutes to get his money back.
A Surprising Win
Robert surprised everyone, including himself, by winning the race! He set a new record for the course with a time of 2 hours, 7 minutes, and 21 seconds. This was an amazing start to his career.
Racing in 2009
In 2009, Robert finished fifth in a 20-kilometer race in the Netherlands. Six weeks later, he came in fifth at the 2009 Boston Marathon. His time was 2 hours, 10 minutes, and 6 seconds. Later that year, he went back to the Frankfurt Marathon to try and win again. He ran even faster, finishing in 2 hours, 6 minutes, and 23 seconds. This was his best time ever, but he came in second place.
Boston Marathon Champion
In 2010, Robert won the Boston Marathon! He broke the course record by more than a minute with a time of 2 hours, 5 minutes, and 52 seconds. The weather was perfect for running that day.
Robert and another champion runner, Deriba Merga, pulled ahead of everyone else. They ran super fast up a famous part of the course called "Heartbreak Hill." Robert started to pull away from Merga near the end of the race. Merga then fell behind, finishing third. Robert won by a lot, showing his great talent.
What He Said
After his big win, Robert simply said, "I tried to show my talent." He planned to use his prize money to buy more cows for his farm in Eldoret, Kenya. He was the seventeenth Kenyan man to win the Boston Marathon in 20 years.
Later Races
Robert competed in the 2010 Chicago Marathon later in 2010. He finished in sixth place. In 2011, he returned to the 2011 Boston Marathon to defend his title. Even though he ran a fast time of 2 hours, 6 minutes, and 43 seconds, he finished sixth. He also ran the Frankfurt Marathon again that year, finishing fifth.
Training and Family
Robert trains with another great marathon runner, William Kiplagat, who is also his coach. It's interesting to know that Robert is not related to another famous runner named Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot, even though their names are very similar. Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot is from the Kipsigis tribe, while Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot is from the Nandi tribe.
