Early Life and Art Training
Robert Lougheed grew up on a farm in Massey, Ontario, Canada. He started his career as an illustrator, drawing pictures for mail-order catalogs and the Toronto Star newspaper. Even while working, he studied art. He attended the Ontario College of Art and later the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal.
When he was 25, Lougheed moved to New York City. There, he continued his art education at the Art Students League of New York. He learned from famous artists like Frank Vincent DuMond and Dean Cornwell.
A Career in Illustration
For more than 30 years, Robert Lougheed worked as a professional illustrator. His artwork appeared in popular magazines such as National Geographic and Reader's Digest. You might even recognize one of his most famous commercial designs: the red flying horse logo for Mobil Oil.
Capturing the American West
Lougheed loved exploring the American West. He spent a lot of time at the old Bell Ranch in New Mexico. This region's stunning scenery and wildlife inspired many of his paintings.
Because of his amazing work, the United States Post Office Department asked him to design a special stamp in 1970. He created the six-cent buffalo stamp for their Wildlife Conservation Series.
Illustrating Children's Books
Robert Lougheed also used his artistic skills to illustrate children's books. He drew pictures for popular horse novels like Mustang and San Domingo by Marguerite Henry. He also illustrated books about the Bell Ranch by George F. Ellis and Martha Downer Ellis. These books included The Bell Ranch As I Knew It, Bell Ranch Sketches, Bell Ranch People and Places, and Bell Ranch Recollections.
Awards and Legacy
Robert Lougheed received many awards for his art. He won honors at both the National Academy of Western Art and the Cowboy Artists of America. Some of his beautiful paintings are displayed at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Lougheed was very dedicated to art education. He helped start the National Academy of Art at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. He also volunteered his time to teach many young painters.
Outside of art, Robert Lougheed was a skilled badminton player. He even won several regional and state championships in Connecticut for doubles.
Remembering Robert Lougheed
In December 2007, the Lougheed Studio opened in Vail, Colorado. This studio is dedicated to celebrating Robert Lougheed's life and his amazing artwork. In January 2010, a book called Robert Lougheed Follow the Sun was released. It tells the story of this incredible artist's life and career.
