Robert Lee "Pops" Popwell (born December 29, 1950 – died November 27, 2017) was an American musician. He was especially known for playing the bass guitar and percussion in a style called jazz-funk. This music mixes elements of jazz, soul, and funk.

Robert Popwell's Music Journey

Robert Popwell was often called "Pops." He played with many famous music groups and artists. Two of the most well-known groups he played with were The Young Rascals and The Crusaders. He also worked with the Macon Rhythm Section.

The Young Rascals were a very important group. They were honored in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. This is a special place for musicians who have made a big impact on rock and roll music. The group was also inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2005.

Playing with Music Stars

Pops played on albums for many legendary singers and musicians. Some of these include Aretha Franklin, George Benson, Ron Wood (from The Rolling Stones), Al Jarreau, and Smokey Robinson. He also played with Bette Midler, Gregg Allman, Bob Dylan, and B.B. King.

One of his most famous contributions was playing percussion on Aretha Franklin's hit song "Rock Steady."

On Tour and in Movies

Besides recording, Robert Popwell also went on tour. He toured with popular artists like Bette Midler and Olivia Newton-John.

He even appeared in a movie! Pops was in the film Hard to Hold with singer and actor Rick Springfield. He was also featured in a live concert video for Olivia Newton-John in 1982.

Pops also helped write songs. He co-wrote a song called "Boy Meets World" with the rap artist Erick Sermon. He also wrote "Feelin Funky" for The Crusaders' album Those Southern Knights.

Robert Popwell passed away in Lebanon, Tennessee, when he was 66 years old. He left behind his wife and three children.
