Colonel Robert Souper Howard (born September 9, 1818 – died January 13, 1881) was a brave Chilean soldier. Even though he was born in England, he served in the Chilean Army for most of the War of the Pacific. He played an important part in many battles during this conflict.

Early Life of Robert Souper

Robert Souper Howard was born in Harwich, England, on September 9, 1818. His father, William Henry Souper, was an army officer. Robert also had an older brother named Philip Dottin Souper.

Later, his family moved across the English Channel to Europe. They lived in places like Saint-Omer and Ghent. They made this move for financial reasons.

Souper's Role in the War of the Pacific

Robert Souper moved to Chile in 1843. He started working on a large farm called a hacienda. After some time, he bought his own land in Talca Province.

Joining the Chilean Army

When the War of the Pacific was about to begin, Robert Souper joined the Chilean Army. This was on April 3, 1879, just a few days before the war officially started. He joined as a Captain. Minister Rafael Sotomayor chose him to serve. Souper was also present during the important Naval Battle of Angamos.

Key Battles and Achievements

Souper became a member of the Army General Staff. This meant he helped plan and organize military actions. He took part in several major battles:

  • The Battle of Pisagua on November 2, 1879.
  • The Battle of Dolores on November 19, 1879.

His efforts helped Chile capture the Peruvian area of Tarapacá. This area was then cut off from the rest of Peru.

During Chile's push into Tarapacá, Souper served under General Manuel Baquedano. He was General Baquedano's Aide de Camp. This role meant he was a personal assistant to the general. Under General Baquedano's command, Souper fought in more important battles:

  • The Battle of Los Ángeles.
  • The Battle of Alto de la Alianza.
  • The attack on Arica.

His Final Moments

Colonel Robert Souper Howard was killed on January 13, 1881. This happened after the Battle of San Juan and Chorrillos. He died while serving his country during the war.
