Robert James Timlin (born July 26, 1932 – died January 17, 2017) was an important United States federal judge. He served in the United States District Court for the Central District of California. A federal judge helps make sure laws are followed fairly across the country.

Robert James Timlin was a respected judge who worked in different courts for many years. He was known for his long career in law, serving both in California's state courts and later as a federal judge. He was born in Buffalo, New York, and passed away in Santa Barbara, California.

Early Life and Education

Robert Timlin went to Georgetown University and earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, in 1954. This degree is often called an A.B.

He continued his studies at Georgetown University Law Center. There, he earned two more law degrees. He received his Juris Doctor (J.D.) in 1959, which is the main degree needed to become a lawyer. Later, in 1964, he earned a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree, which is an advanced law degree.

His Career as a Judge

Before becoming a federal judge, Robert Timlin had a busy career in law. He worked in several important roles in California.

  • He was a judge on the California Courts of Appeal, specifically for the 4th District. This court reviews decisions made by lower courts.
  • He also served as a judge in the Municipal and Superior Courts for Riverside County. These courts handle many different types of cases.
  • Earlier in his career, he was the City Attorney for Corona, California. This means he was the main lawyer for the city government.
  • He also worked as an Assistant United States Attorney. In this role, he represented the U.S. government in legal cases.

Before moving to California, Timlin worked for the United States Department of Justice. He was a Special Attorney in their Criminal Division. This part of the government deals with federal crimes.

Becoming a Federal Judge

Robert Timlin was chosen to become a federal judge by President Bill Clinton. President Clinton nominated him for this new judge position on April 26, 1994.

The United States Senate had to approve his nomination. They confirmed him on September 14, 1994. He officially started his job as a federal judge on September 15, 1994.

On February 1, 2005, Judge Timlin took on a new role called senior status. This means a judge can reduce their workload but still hear cases. He remained in senior status until he passed away on January 17, 2017.
