Early Life and Beginnings
Robson Golightly Green was born on December 18, 1964, in Hexham, England. He grew up in a small mining village called Dudley. His father was a miner, and his mother worked as a cleaner and shopkeeper. He was named Robson after his grandmother's family name and Golightly after his other grandmother's family name.
Robson went to Dudley Middle Comprehensive School. For a short time, he thought about joining the Royal Air Force after being inspired by jets flying overhead. However, he decided against it after two weeks at an officer training camp. He also learned to play the guitar and started his first band, Solid State, in 1982. He also spent time at the Backworth Drama Centre, where he acted in school plays and other productions.
After leaving school at 16 with five O-levels, Robson worked as a draughtsman at Swan Hunter's shipyard. He even tried professional boxing training for a play where he played a boxer. After two years at the shipyard, he decided to become an actor. He trained with Max Roberts, his former director from Backworth. While training, he continued his music career in a local band called the Workie Tickets.
Acting and Music Career
Robson Green got his first big acting chance in a film by Amber Films. This film showed the challenges faced by working-class people in England at that time. Soon after, he got more acting jobs. He first became well-known in the BBC series Casualty. After three seasons, he gained national fame as Dave Tucker in the drama series Soldier Soldier.
In 1995, Robson Green and his co-star Jerome Flynn sang "Unchained Melody" on an episode of Soldier Soldier. Many people wanted to buy the song. So, music producer Simon Cowell convinced them to release it as a single. It was a huge hit, staying at number one for seven weeks in the UK Singles Chart. It sold over 1.8 million copies, becoming the best-selling single of the year. Robson & Jerome then had two more number one singles and two number one albums, all featuring classic songs.
The success of the song helped Robson Green sign a deal with ITV to star in several dramas. These included Touching Evil, Grafters, and Reckless. In 1996, he started his own production company, Coastal Productions, with Sandra Jobling. Their goal was to help young people from the North East get acting opportunities, just like he had. This company has produced many of Robson's TV shows and local plays. In 2002, Green starred as Dr. Tony Hill in the crime drama Wire in the Blood.
His production company has also created new dramas for TV, like the popular Christmas Lights. This led to a series called Northern Lights, and then a sequel called City Lights.
In 1995, Robson Green won the Smash Hits Poll Winner's Party award for Favourite TV Actor. In 1997, he starred in the TV film The Student Prince. In 1998, he received an honorary degree from the University of Northumbria. In 2006, he was voted number 35 in a poll of TV's greatest stars in the UK.
In 2000, Green starred in the ITV drama Close and True. In 2001, he was in the six-part ITV drama Take Me. In 2002, he starred in the TV movie Me and Mrs. Jones. He also released his first solo album, Moment in Time, but it was not as successful as his music with Jerome Flynn.
In 2003, Green starred in the ITV mini-series Unconditional Love and the BBC series Trust. In 2005, he starred in Like Father Like Son and Rocket Man. In Rocket Man, he played a widower trying to build a rocket to send his wife's ashes into space.
