Rochester is a town located in Ulster County, New York. It is found in the United States. In 2022, about 7,305 people lived there.
Rochester is in the middle of Ulster County. The northwestern part of the town is inside the beautiful Catskill Park. A main road, U.S. Route 209, goes right through the town.

History of Rochester
The area we now call Rochester was first known as Mombaccus by the Dutch settlers. Europeans started living here in 1672. The name Rochester began to be used after a special land document was issued in 1703.
Rochester officially became a town in 1788. Its formal establishment as a town happened in 1803. Over time, parts of Rochester were used to create other towns. These include Middletown (1798), Neversink (1798), Wawarsing (1806), and Gardiner (1853).
Geography of Rochester
Rochester covers a total area of about 88.8 square miles (229.9 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 88.4 square miles (229.0 square kilometers), is land. A small part, about 0.4 square miles (1.0 square kilometer), is covered by water.
The town is located in the lower hills of the famous Catskill Mountains. This gives Rochester a scenic and natural setting.

In 2000, there were 7,018 people living in Rochester. These people made up 2,688 households and 1,830 families. The population density was about 79.4 people per square mile (30.7 people per square kilometer).
Most of the people in Rochester were white (93.42%). Other groups included African American (2.51%), Native American (0.54%), and Asian (0.51%). About 4.83% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.
About 34.3% of households had children under 18 living with them. The average household had 2.58 people. The average family had 3.10 people.
The median age in the town was 38 years old. This means half the people were younger than 38 and half were older. About 26.4% of the population was under 18.
The median income for a household was $43,071. For families, it was $47,257. The income per person in the town was $21,065. About 10.9% of the population lived below the poverty line.
Communities and Places in Rochester
Rochester is home to many small communities and interesting places. Here are some of them:
- Accord – This is a small village, also called a hamlet. It is where the town government is located.
- Alligerville – This hamlet is close to the eastern edge of the town. The Alligerville Historic District is a special area here. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.
- Cherrytown – A hamlet found northwest of Mombaccus.
- Fantinekill – This hamlet is north of Kerhonkson and Pataukunk, along Route 3.
- Granite – A hamlet located south of Kerhonkson.
- Kerhonkson – This hamlet is on the western border of the town. It is also on US 209.
- Liebhart – A hamlet in the northern part of the town, east of Tabasco.
- Kyserike – This hamlet is near the eastern town line, east of Alligerville.
- Mettacahonts – A hamlet located north of Accord.
- Mill Hook – A hamlet found northwest of Accord.
- Minniwaska – A hamlet close to the southern town line.
- Minnewaska State Park – A beautiful state park that is partly in the southern area of Rochester.
- Mohonk Preserve – A nature preserve that is partly in the eastern part of the town. Part of Lake Mohonk is also within Rochester.
- Mombaccus – A hamlet north of Fantinekill, along Route 3.
- Palentown – This hamlet is in the northwestern part of the town. It is inside the Catskill State Park.
- Pataukunk – A hamlet north of Kerhonkson, along Route 3.
- Pine Bush – A location on the western town line, north of Kerhonkson.
- Potterville – A hamlet near the town line in the northwestern part of the town. It is also inside the Catskill State Park.
- Riggsville – A hamlet in the northwestern part of the town. It is inside the Catskill State Park, southwest of Palentown.
- St. Joseph – A hamlet located southeast of Accord.
- Tabasco – A hamlet in the northern part of the town, along Route 3.
- Whitfield – A hamlet found northeast of Accord.
- Yagerville – A location south of Potterville, found within the Catskill State Park.
