Rock Dog is a fun computer-animated comedy movie from 2016. It was made by Mandoo Pictures and Huayi Brothers. The film is based on a Chinese graphic novel called Tibetan Rock Dog by Zheng Jun.

The movie tells the story of a young Tibetan Mastiff named Bodi. He lives in the mountains but dreams of becoming a rock star. His adventure begins when a radio falls from the sky, changing his life forever.

Rock Dog features the voices of famous actors like Luke Wilson, Eddie Izzard, J. K. Simmons, and Matt Dillon. It was first released in China in 2016 and then in the United States in 2017.

The Story of Rock Dog

Bodi, a teenage Tibetan Mastiff, is supposed to become the next guard of Snow Mountain village. He is meant to follow in the paw prints of his dad, Khampa. Years ago, Khampa bravely chased away a group of grey wolves led by the sneaky Linnux.

Khampa uses sheep dressed as Mastiffs to make the village look like it has many guards. This helps keep the wolves away. Bodi struggles to learn his father's special move, the "Iron Paw." This move creates a strong blast when Bodi "finds the fire" inside himself. Khampa has banned music in the village because it used to distract Bodi.

One day, a plane accidentally drops a package near Bodi. Inside, Bodi finds a radio and hears rock music for the first time. He is amazed by the famous British rock legend, Angus Scattergood. Bodi then takes a traditional instrument called a dramyin and turns it into a guitar. He starts practicing music instead of guarding the village, which makes his dad unhappy.

After a misunderstanding with his dad and the guard sheep, Bodi accidentally causes a false alarm. The village elder, Fleetwood Yak, convinces Khampa to let Bodi follow his dream. Bodi gets a bus ticket to the city. Khampa makes him promise to give up music if his trip doesn't work out. At the bus station, two of Linnux's helpers, Riff and Skozz, spot Bodi. Linnux wants them to kidnap Bodi so he can take over Snow Mountain.

Bodi's City Adventure

Bodi arrives in the city and goes to Rock and Roll Park, where Angus Scattergood started his career. He tries to join a band with Darma, a friendly fox who plays bass, and Germur, a forgetful goat drummer. But Bodi feels embarrassed after losing a guitar contest to Trey, an arrogant snow leopard.

Trey learns that Bodi looks up to Angus Scattergood. He tricks Bodi into trying to get guitar lessons from Angus at his mansion. Trey knows a secret about Angus's security. Angus Scattergood is actually a white Persian cat who always wears sunglasses. He is struggling to write new songs. His only friend is his robot butler, Ozzie. Angus's manager, Ian, gives him only three days to create a new hit song.

Bodi tries to meet Angus, but Angus tries to avoid him. Later, Bodi and Angus get lost in an alley. Bodi plays music at Rock and Roll Park to earn money for Angus to get back home. However, Riff and Skozz mistakenly kidnap Angus instead of Bodi. When they realize their mistake, Linnux gets angry and sends them to find Bodi again. They drop Angus back at his mansion.

Angus thinks his music career is over because he has little time left to write a song. Then, he hears Bodi playing his guitar. Angus invites Bodi in, pretending to give him a "guitar lesson." Together, they create a new song called "Glorious."

Finding His Fire

Bodi later hears Angus taking all the credit for "Glorious" on the radio. Bodi feels used and sad. Trey makes fun of him, and everyone at the park leaves. Darma and Germur feel sorry for Bodi. Soon after, Linnux's henchmen capture Bodi using tranquilizer darts. While Bodi is confused, Linnux tricks him into revealing the fake Mastiff guards in the village.

Linnux and his gang head to Snow Mountain. Bodi is forced into a boxing match at Linnux's Fight Palace. But Bodi cleverly gets his opponent to break the cage, allowing him to escape.

Angus Scattergood feels bad for using Bodi. Ozzie, his robot butler, helps him realize his mistake. Angus uses his old tour bus to find Bodi and apologize. At Rock and Roll Park, Angus meets Darma and Germur. They see Bodi's dart-covered guitar and realize he was captured. Angus decides to rescue Bodi instead of sending in his new song.

Angus finds Bodi outside Linnux's hideout. He apologizes and gives Bodi his old acoustic guitar with his autograph. They then rush to Snow Mountain to stop Linnux and his wolves. Linnux and his gang are about to attack the villagers. But Bodi arrives just in time.

After an exciting chase, Bodi finally "finds the fire" by playing Angus's guitar. This makes the wolves, villagers, and his friends float in the air. Khampa uses his Iron Paw to send Linnux away. Khampa then accepts Bodi's dream of playing rock music.

Back in the city, Angus gives Bodi full credit for "Glorious." Bodi forms a band with Darma and Germur. They perform "Glorious" for the city, the Snow Mountain villagers, Khampa, and even some of the wolves at Linnux's old Fight Palace. Angus recommends Bodi's band to his manager, Ian. Bodi shows the audience his amazing blue energy wave.
