Roessleville is a small community, also called a hamlet, located in the town of Colonie, Albany County, New York. It's a busy suburb right next to the city of Albany. You can find it along New York State Route 5. Roessleville was counted as a special "census-designated place" (CDP) in 1990 and again in 2020, which helps track its population.

Roessleville's History

Roessleville was once part of a large area called the Albany Pine Bush. This area was covered in special pine trees and stretched between Albany and Schenectady. Later, in the 1940s, this land was used for farms. More recently, it has grown into a busy suburb with many homes.

How Roessleville Got Its Name

Roessleville is named after a man named Theophilus Roessle. He was an immigrant from Germany. Mr. Roessle built one of the most beautiful mansions in the Albany area right here. What is now Elmhurst Avenue used to be his private, gated driveway.

Famous People from Roessleville

Two well-known people who lived in Roessleville were Josiah and Elizabeth Stanford. They were the parents of Leland Stanford. Leland Stanford later became a very important person, serving as the Governor of California. His family moved to Roessleville in 1840. They owned a large property called Elm Grove Farm and a hotel.

Geography of Roessleville

Roessleville is a specific part of the town of Colonie. It is located between Osborne Road and Wolf Road. Central Avenue, which is also New York Route 5, cuts right through the middle of the area.

Where Roessleville Is Located

The border of Albany city is along Roessleville's southeastern side. The village of Colonie is on its northwestern side, near Wolf Road. In 1990, the United States Census Bureau said that Roessleville, as a census-designated place, covered about 2.9 square miles (7.5 square kilometers).

It can be tricky to count the exact population of hamlets. This is because hamlets do not have official, fixed borders. However, when Roessleville was a "census-designated place" (CDP), it had clear boundaries for counting people.

Population Changes Over Time

Roessleville was not a CDP in 1960. But in 1970, it was a CDP and had 5,476 people. This number included 125 people from a small part of the town of Guilderland. The Guilderland section was not included in the 1980 count. In 1990, Roessleville had a population of 10,753 people.
