Rogelio "Roger" Moret Torres (September 16, 1949 – December 7, 2020) was a professional baseball player from Puerto Rico. He played as a pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1970 to 1976 and again in 1978. Roger played for the Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves, and the Texas Rangers. He was a tall, slender left-handed pitcher, standing 6 feet 4 inches (193 cm) tall and weighing 170 pounds (77 kg).

Roger Moret's Baseball Career

Roger Moret played in 168 baseball games during his career. He started 82 of those games as a starting pitcher and came in to pitch during 86 games as a reliever. He had a good record, winning 47 games and losing 27. His earned run average (ERA) was 3.66, which shows how well he prevented opponents from scoring.

Roger also pitched 24 complete games, which means he pitched the entire game by himself. He had five shutouts, where the other team scored no runs at all. He also earned 12 saves by finishing games where his team was ahead. In total, he pitched 723 and one-third innings, allowing 656 hits and 339 walks, while striking out 408 batters.

Top Pitching Moments

Roger was a very successful pitcher in the American League. He led the league in winning percentage in both 1973 and 1975. This means he won a very high percentage of the games he pitched in those years.

On August 21, 1974, Roger pitched an amazing game against the Chicago White Sox. He threw a complete game and allowed only one hit, which is very rare and impressive! The only hit was an infield single by Chicago's star player, Dick Allen, in the seventh inning. Roger walked two batters and struck out 12 in that game.

Playing in the World Series

Roger Moret was a key player for the Boston Red Sox team that won the American League championship in 1975. During that regular season, he won 14 games and lost only 3.

He also pitched in four games during the postseason. In the ALCS, he helped the Red Sox win Game 2 against the Oakland Athletics. He pitched a scoreless inning and earned the win when Boston took the lead.

Later, in the 1975 World Series, Roger pitched in three games, including the famous Game 6. He did not allow any runs to score against the Cincinnati Reds in his one and two-thirds innings of pitching. He was traded to the Atlanta Braves after the World Series ended.

Later Career and Health

Roger later joined the Texas Rangers. On April 12, 1978, he was scheduled to start a game against the Detroit Tigers. However, he became very ill before the game and had to be taken to a hospital. He played in only six more games after this health issue.

Roger Moret passed away on December 7, 2020, in his hometown of Guayama, Puerto Rico. He was 71 years old and died from cancer.
